Spring 2009
April 9, Bailey made it until April 8 - we thought that it was over on Saturday and then miraculously Bailey wanted to walk on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. He couldn't get up but we were able to take our 350 lbs pet for 4 walks over the course of those three days. He passed on his own in the early morning on April 8. Thank you to all that made this easier for us.
April 4, As of the writing of this entry - we still have some snow and ice on the ground. We had a lot of melt yesterday but there are still large areas (the size of many peoples yards) covered with snow and ice. I'm really ready for it to be gone. It was a hard winter here at Hemlock Haven Farm. We lost our beautiful Milagra to a bad fall. It came as quite a surprise - she was always one of our healthiest llamas. Llamas normally are very low maintenance. But she fell while we were at work and by the time we found her it was too late. I was just starting to creep out of my depression. Then 2.5 weeks ago we got some rain/freezing rain. It changed very suddenly and Bailey slid into an awkward position. Probably would have been fine if it wasn't for the what he slid down into the barn. Nothing we could have done to prevent the fall but LFB really felt like there was something we could do to fix Bailey. That night he was comfortably sitting and eating grain and drinking water - ears up. The next morning he was on his feet again. The following day he was back down again. He has not been up again on his own since. LFB and I built a lift and we get him up two times a day. But complications have set in and he is showing now sign of standing on his own. We have given him a deadline of Monday to stand on his own - as the other complications are really starting to impact his quality of life. The other llamas hang out near him - mostly as we keep him quite bedded with hay and they like that.
The dogs are well and we are tired - but pushing through and getting plenty of fresh air.
Looking forward to the joys of spring,
Llamafarmgirl
